Contractor Downer Mining will lay off staff at Fortescue Metals Groups’ Christmas Creek iron ore mine in the Pilbara.

A Downer spokesperson told Australian Mining about 100 jobs will go in the next few days.

“We need to ensure we have the right size workforce, so we need to reduce our workforce by around 100 people,” the spokesperson said.

“There won’t be immediate redeployment options with Downer."

A Fortescue spokesperson told Australian Mining contractor numbers would be reduced at the Christmas Creek One (CC1) mine.

The spokesperson said a reduction in overburden removal requirements at the operation is fuelling the job cuts.

“There will be a reduction in the number of personnel required by Downer at CC1,” the Fortescue spokesperson said.

Fortescue went on to state that there have been no redundancies at the nearby Cloudbreak mine.
