It was always going to happen that when none of the bigwigs at Fortescue showed up at the Diggers & Dealers bash in Kalgoorlie, there was bound to be lots of chatter about what was more important to them.

Chairman Andrew Forrest, chief executive Nev Power, and finance man Stephen Pearce have been long-term supporters of D&D over the years on Fortescue’s journey from being an idea and some maps on a kitchen table to third force status in the Pilbara.

But not this time, and it is doubtful it had anything to do with Kal’s unusually cold weather this year, prompting those on either side of the bars around the town to cover up more than they normally would.
Nev pulled out last week, and his speaking spot was filled ably by the perfectly nice Tim Langmead, Fortescue’s director of external relations.

But it was a case of the delegates wanting the butcher, not the block.

In the absence of Nev, Twiggy and/or Pearce, they were left to make up their own minds. Naturally enough it circled back to the expectation Fortescue is looking to cut a deal with China Inc on the sale of part of its rail infrastructure to reduce debt.
