Justice blocks R $ 1bn from Vale for dam evacuation in MG

SÃO PAULO - Vale said on Monday morning that the 1st Civil Court of the District of Nova Lima, Minas Gerais, ruled on Friday the blocking of R $ 1 billion in resources of the company to ensure the repair of damages caused to those affected by the evacuation of the self-rescue zone of the Vargem Grande dam in the municipality of Nova Lima and of potential damages to people and the environment in case of disruption.

The company also said that the court decided to suspend operations at the site and that the company take measures to ensure the stability and safety of the dam and other structures of the mining complex.

Vale informed that it had not been notified of the decision and that it will take the appropriate measures. She also said that the decision does not change the iron ore sales forecast for 2019, which she estimates will be between 307 million and 332 million tons. Last year, the company sold a total of 308.9 million tonnes of iron ore, an increase of 6% over that of 2017.

In February, the company relocated people living near the dam of the Vargem Grande Complex. It temporarily suspended operations on the site on February 4 to speed up the process of decommissioning the site dam.
