Well, on Sunday: a breakthrough.Helder Barbalho, who himself tested positive last week, has announced the extension of the lockdown of 10 cities in Para state, to include 5 more, and one of these is Parauapebas, the lifeline of the Carajas mines. This is not what Vale would have hoped for. It is a very severe lockdown.

Like Flavio Dino, Governor of neighbouring Maranhao, Helder Barbalho is from the communist party of Brazil (PCdoB). He is in no doubt about the critical stage that Para has stumbled into, with most of it's ICU beds now full, and the case load still increasing.

Government of Pará Decrees “Lockdown” in Parauapebas and 15 More Cities By Writing

The Government of Pará, in an extraordinary edition of DOE (State Official Gazette), has now extended the lockdown (total blockade, in English) in 15 cities in Pará, including Parauapebas, Canaã dos Carajás and Marabá.

Before, there were 10, the vast majority around the capital of Pará. The decree prohibits the circulation of people, except for reasons of force majeure, justified in the following cases, such as the purchase of foodstuffs, medicines, medical and hospital products, cleaning and personal hygiene products, among others.

In the permitted cases of movement of persons, the use of masks is required. The movement of people in the permitted cases should be duly proven, including the presentation of social identification with photo. There is no requirement for voter registration. (There is a local government election happening)





Will it be enough, this heavy-handed, total lockdown? Or is it too little too late for this city of dreams, so close to Vale's El Dorado?
