Good to see that, with some help from Vale in acquiring more test kits, they have started the promised drive-through, rapid testing in Parauapebas. Of course this has resulted in a spectacular rise in the number of confirmed cases: 302 in one day in this city of some 200,000.

Let's put this in perspective- imagine 302 new cases and 3 deaths in one day in a city like Geelong.

And in Parauapebas, there's a lack of appropriate hospital beds- so sick people are just sent home to self isolate (but do they?).

And these extra cases they are finding now- they were there anyway, mixing with other people, infectuous.

They will keep testing and keep finding more cases- because they are already there- and keep sending the patients home.

1,847 active cases in home isolation in this city of miners and their families- with Vale's Carajas mines only 50 kilometers away. 74 recorded deaths.

And not so far away, in Maraba, the virus is already in the indiginous communities too, in the villages of the Xicrin and Katete and other tribes.

Total cases now at 2,809, and heading higher. Lockdown over, with social distancing recommended.

When I first started posting about Parauapebas, not that long ago- there were 433 cases. This city, carved from the Amazon forest 32 years ago, is on the edge of a precipice.
