The "city" the clinical physician, Dr Filho, is talking about here is not Parauapebas, 50ks from the mines. It is a small town called Carajas (not to be confused with Canaa), population 6,000, only 15ks from Serre Norte. This is primarily a dormitory town for Vale workers and their families, in the midst of the Amazon forest. It has a hospital (no ICU beds) shops, colleges, etc, etc.

If they are seeing "tons of community transmissions" there as the doctor states- then the Carajas mines are already heavily affected and there are sick workers and sick family members in the town.

If it comes out that any of the very highly productive mines of Vale's Northern System, in the south eastern amazon region, are affected and need to be temporarily closed, it will impact the tightly balanced IO market severely.

You have to also ask, are the city authorities in nearby Parauapebas opening up pubs, nightclubs, cinemas, restaurants etc in the midst of the pandemic because it's safe or simply to suggest that everything is becoming normal, and thereby take the heat out of the mines issue? One would hope it's the former, but.....
