Twiggy expands beefbusiness, dashing native title group's hopes for eco tourism business in theKimberleyFranRimrod and HamishHastie

    July 9, 2020 — 9.53am

“Plans by a native title groupto create a sustainable tourism business on a large cattle station in WesternAustralia’s Kimberley have been shattered after Andrew 'Twiggy' Forrest’sfamily business, Tattarang, revealed they bought the land.

Located400 kilometres east of Broome, Jubilee Downs cattle station — which includesthe Quanbun Downs lease — has been co-owned by pastoralists Keith and KarenAnderson and United States billionaire Edward Bass since the 1980s.

Last week theYi-Martuwarra Ngurrara native title group voiced disappointment itsconsortium's $25 million bid had been knocked back because it couldn't competewith bids which reached at least $30 million.

Yi-MartuwarraNgurrara had plans to use the pastoral lease for sustainable development and asa tourism business but had speculated the higher bids came from wealthyindividuals with pastoral interests in the Kimberley.

Hopes the state government could step in to bring the bid over the line were dashed when a spokeswoman for WA Treasurer Ben Wyatt said it retained a private sale between a willing seller and buyer.

The 220,00 hectare Jubilee Down station will become part of MrForrest’s gate-to-plate beef business with WA’s largest beef processing facility at Harvey in WA’s South West.

In a statement released on Thursday Andrew and Nicola Forresttried to dispel fears by Yi-Martuwarra Ngurrara native title group that theculturally significant Fitzroy was under threat by irrigation needs.

“We are passionate about the unique environment of theKimberley, and the precious waterway and life-force that is the Fitzroy River,”the statement read.

“We strongly believe in theprinciple of balancing the need for sustainable agriculture and job creationfor local communities, with the need to preserve culture and heritage sites, while restoring the land and its original fauna to its natural habitat.”

Yi-Martuwarra traditional ownerAnthony McLarty said the state government had committed to protect the Fitzroyand support traditional owners' plans for sustainable development in theregion, and called on it to help their bid.”
