Green steel won't IMO be considered a cyclical product for a long time, it will be a premium product which will have a decent customer base for people, organisations or countries which want to flaunt green credentials.
What premium would a electric car sell for made with green steel? how much extra would a company be willing to pay for an office building if the rebar was green? - they could sell the lower carbon footprint of the building during construction as well as energy ratings etc. Would a logo on the front of a Tesla that indicates it used green steel attract a premium in the order of what it costs offset that CO2 (tens of dollars)? or would people see it as a way of saying "my Tesla is greener" aka attract a premium of hundreds or thousands of dollars? an office building, lower CO2 credentials sell buildings, and get premiums on leases for builidngs. Green steel IMO will largely not be going to china, but to developed countries where customers are willing to pay a little more to flaunt their green credentials. Ironically FMG through this move is removing it's reliance on China as a customer, but it's a move that analysts haven't picked up on yet because FMG is smart enough not to offend their customer in the first place by spelling it out.
