The difference is analyst are held to a higher standard of accountability, it can't just be a finger in the air/gut feeling job it's got to be based on supply/demand/cost curve analysis. Also do not underestimate the roll speculation plays as well.
Secondly, it is not the "analyst" who comes up with these numbers, it is the commoditiy team within the respective research houses that tell the analyst what values to use.
Thirdly and most importantly, the analyst tells you what price assumptions they have used, it is there for all to see and individual investors can put their own tilt on it from there.
Thats not a lie or been misleading, that's complete transparency.
