I am not sure what you mean by “Notional” but franking credits are very real, and have a big impact on your investment returns.
earning $1 in franked dividends is the same as earning $1.43 in other income.
for example, let’s say you pay 40% tax on your income.
If you earn $1 in bank interest the government takes $0.40 leaving you with only $0.60.
But if you earn $1 franked dividend, they add $1.43 to your taxable income before charging you the 40% tax, and they will deduct the $0.57 tax from your $1.43, leaving you with $0.86 to spend.
all else being equal, share price should drop by div + franking on ex dividend day, if it doesn’t it’s the same as it going up
