It extends for 5 days including the weekend, because last weekend most people were working on Sunday. Government schools and most other schools also had regular class on last Sunday.
The weekend after the labour holiday they again will work on the weekend and have classes. I think it is a Saturday.
So those 2 days worked on the weekend are transferred to this Thursday and Friday.
Many including myself prefer just having our weekend but the government likes longer holidays to encourage spending.Without actually sacrificing working days.
