It's very easy to say things like "it's dog eat dog" and "red in tooth and claw", but it's simplistic. In most cases co-operation is a more productive strategy than competition. If you hunt alone you'll catch one rabbit, but three hunters working together will catch four. You care about the other hunters because without them you'd get less. Altruism and self-interest intersect. Being "noble" is a fundamental biological drive. Individual aspiration co-exists with it in a dynamic way. You CAN go it alone, but if you push it too hard the others will team up against you and you will end up on the wrong side of history. Competition is healthy if it is based on adherence to the rules of the system.
