Occasionally we get a call - why don't we simply produce our own steel, especially green steel? Surely we'd be saving a ton on shipping and the like. Not having a go at people but rather got me thinking. IMHO it fails to account for all the other costs (labour, capital, energy) where Oz simply has a distinct disadvantage, Not saying it's not doable, but I question whether the economics stacks up. Proof in puddinig is the recent "pullback" in ambition on hydrogen by AF where he notes the cost of energy. In addition it seems to me that the steel industry goes through its own cycles of profitability - so it's not like its a lay down misere. Furthermore, while some countries may be prepared to pay more for green steel - the majority by far will I suspect keep an eye on costs. my 2c - DYOR
