Actually comparable storms, Joan (1975), Dean (1980) & George (2007) all hit more than 50km east of the city. Only the much smaller Cat3 Connie (87) came close to the city. For something comparable you need to look at the unnamed storms of 1939 and 1942, which devastated a much smaller town along with it's Pearling industry.
I'm not an FMG holder and not suggesting you sell - I'm just a weather geek with a bit a of a knack for calling these (I nailed Yasi in QLD along with Katrina and more recently Ian in the US). All I'm saying is I don't see Isla turning the way BOM has suggested - use that info however you wish.
