PERTH (Dow Jones)--Iron ore exports from Australia's Port Hedland rose 8.4% in October as shipments to Japan more than doubled, according to an update on the Port Authority's website Tuesday. The October exports of 16.998 million metric tons were up from 15.673 million tons in September, the authority said. Iron ore exports to China, normally the port's largest destination, slipped to 6.47 million tons versus 10.82 million tons in September, the website said. In contrast, shipments to Japan rose sharply to 7.11 million tons, up from 2.54 million tons a month earlier. The authority doesn't provide individual breakdowns for major port exporters BHP Billiton Ltd. (BHP), Fortescue Metals Group Ltd. (FMG.AU) and Atlas Iron Ltd (AGO.AU).
