When VHS swept the global market probably BETA was a better technolgy but never took off. To control supply dominence a product must create the economy of scale to make sure that competitors are left behind. Once this demand is established it would be difficult for other players to enter the market. The lithium ion battery is here to stay and will improve performance along the way , cobalt will play a very significant role IMO.
