Ironbark Zinc - IBG - Exploitation Licence and EIA approved Citronen Fjord Project
Thursday afternoon, Naalakkersuisut approved Ironbark A/S’ Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and a draft for the exploitation licence.
At a signing ceremony today Friday, December 16, 2016 in Nuuk, Minister of Mineral Resources, Múte Bourup Egede, signed the exploitation license alongside the Managing Director of Ironbark A/S, the Australian Jonathan Downes.
The Exploitation License
The Exploitation License grants Ironbark A/S exclusive right to exploit the minerals sphalerite (zinc ore mineral) and galena (lead ore mineral) by Tarsarneq in northern Greenland. The Licence Area is 120 square kilometers and is located in Citronen Fjord in the National Park.
The Minister of Mineral Resources says:
”It is with great satisfaction that I sign the exploitation licence, which will provide a solid framework for the coming exploitation project. The exploitation licence constitutes the overarching framework for the exploitation project and helps to ensure that the project is carried out for the benefit of Greenland and the future generations of Greenlanders.”.”
The signature of the exploitation license marks a key milestone in the project. The exclusive license ensures Ironbark A/S an exclusive exploitation license in the license area for 30 years. The exploitation licence may be extended to 50 years.
Ahead is the preparation for the exploitation and closure plan as well as activity plans. The preparation of these plans will be in close collaboration between Ironbark A/S and the Government of Greenland. Ironbark A/S has a period of 1 year to achieve the Greenland Government's approval of the exploitation and closure plan that will contain the more detailed terms and conditions on issues such as safety and environmental issues.

Environmental Impact Assesment (EIA)
Adoption of the EIA concludes a process that has lasted for many years. The first environmental studies started in 1994. Ironbark A/S has in the process been in dialogue with citizens and interest groups through consultation meetings and written consultation statements. This has led to the final EIA report and White Paper. This is where Ironbark A/S states how the company addresses the environmental impact and how the company will prevent harmful effects on the environment in relation to the project.
Minister for independence, environment, nature and agriculture states:
”We are very much aware of the very special conditions, for such a project in Citronen Fjord in the National Park. Therefore, we are pleased to see that the company has prepared and presented an EIA report and a White Paper, which we can approve. Our work is not done yet. Now we have to implement the plans. We are looking forward to following the project as an environmental authority.”
