Ban sought on mining activities

HASSAN: The Karnataka Hitharakshana Pade has asked the district administration to ban mining in Hosakote and Herur villages of Sakleshpur taluk, as they are part of the Western Ghats.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Santhenahalli Thimme Gowda, director of the Raitha Seva Sahakara Sangha and a member of the Karnataka Hitharakshana Pade, said illegal mining was being carried out on survey numbers 1 and 182 in these two villages. The Herur hill was 1,144 metres above sea level, and it had a tank. If mining continued below it, the tank might breach, he said.

Mr. Thimme Gowda appealed to the district administration to take action against miners, as the licensed area and present mining area were different. He also demanded that silt be removed from the tank so that the water-table in surrounding villages increased. This would provide drinking water as well as water for irrigation to Yesalur hobli. He said that illegal mining had been going on in the area for 20 years.
