Ban on iron ore exports favoured

TUNGABHADRA DAM (BELLARY DISTRICT: Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde while strongly advocating for imposing a ban on export of iron ore, underlined the need to persuade the State and Uion governments to change the mining policy and ban exports.

Mr. Hegde told presspersons that banning export of ore would prevent large-scale extraction of the non-renewable natural mineral resources and ensure that it would be available for posterity on one hand and also prevent the loss of revenue to the State exchequer. “I am for use of the ore for value addition indigenously with encouragement to set up industries to serve the purpose,” he said.

Steps taken by the authorities to check illegal mining had proved ineffective so far, he said.

One person from each of the Forest, Transport, Mines and Geology Department should man the check posts. But during his visit he was surprised to see only one person of a particular department at the check post.
