Dun have to worry about the Chinese and Japanese, it's the Soviet Union that has always led the world in UCG since the mid 50's. Yerostigaz Uzbekistan is the only commercial UCG plant in the world, aside from small pilot trials. A very new concept to the west, and even newer to the Chinese. As far as brown coal goes, this is more complicated and not as easy to produce Syngas due to the wetness of the coal, in some areas. That said, CXY have a JV in the Latrobe Valley targeting 1 billion tonnes of coal, brown coal.
"Even if only 10% of the Designated Areas in Latrobe Valley proves to be suitable for the UCG process, the coal mineralization exploration target base for a drilling program would be of the order of 800 1,200 million tonnes * with potential gas production energy content of about 10,000 PJ, or sufficient energy to supply a 1000 MW power station for 200 years."
