So be weary bowerboy, dont trade the money if you cant afford to lose it (which it sounds like you cannot). If its your life savings, and unless you are willing to put in lots of time and learning effort, then just diversify it into proven companies with strong records of performance and good management in an industry you understand, or get a 'professional' to manage it. Capital preservation as well as appreciation is the key for a person in your position.

P.S. sorry to be boring but telling this guy to buy speccies with his life savings is a terrible disservice to him.
