The second point is that this has a different history to what posters are talking about. France's Muslim population is largely a result of its African colonialism. It held Algeria in North Africa from about 1830-1962, for instance, and the military suppressed the majority Muslim population there brutally. So it has always attracted Muslim migration, and a lot of North African immigrants had a chip on their shoulder about the French, and the military always hated letting the North Africans in.

To a certain extent, that's where France's National Front (now National Rally) came from. Ex-military types who wanted France for the whites and to be allowed to wander the globe subjugating people different from the French.
