"because the privatisation of Telstra had delivered the most wretched quality of service to the bush."

That statement is so incorrect it can't be left to stand as fact. The quality of service has improved to the bush since the good old days when it could take several weeks to get a technician to a fault, when there was a single scratchy line incabable of providing 28kb on dial up, to now where 3G reaches my parents place with a basic external omni directional aerial.

Do they need 100Mb access?? Ridiculous they don't want or need it.
Do they get the same access as the city? Nope, they also don't get the crime or the polution.
Will they spend hundreds rewiring the house with network cable to be able to use the full potential?? I bet mostly no one in the city does either.

This unerring belief that the bush deserves the same as the city is a pile of old cobblers.

Running fibre to large centres makes more sense so that the larger organisations that want access and speed can get it. The rest that don't shouldn't pay for it.
