    Coverage of the Tutankhamun exhibition coming to Melbourne is a vivid reminder of how gold has been valued for thousands of year. Gold figures, gold coins, gold ornaments, gold plates have been valued by kings and potentates for thousands of years. Commoners couldn't afford it.

    I visited Machu Picchu some years ago. The Inca rulers used a large gold disc to hitch the sun on a stone hitching post at the equinox to persuade the populace they had power over the sun. Their gold ornaments still exist.

    Gold is for kings and queens. We are just lucky we can still afford it but maybe not for much longer.
