The main thing is you protected your account, though unauthorised transactions wouldn't be liable to you if the card had been lost or stolen and you took steps to protect it, gave no one access and cancelled as soon as pratcal. And if I remember correct, with CBA, a card in transit needs to be activated so the card would've been useless. If your CURRENT card went missing you cancel, but imo you jumped the gun.
I also have everything on direct debit and don't use cash. I pay the closing balance each month for no interest charge. I once cancelled my wife's card as she thought she lost it only for it to be found within minutes of the cancellation. Phoning up utilities and insurances to realign a payment that may clash is easily done. And using cash for a few days is a novelty...though the archaic bank hours makes it almost impossible to visit one! I used a savings card at a supermarket for easier cash access. Luckily I kept it, as I use my credit card which is linked to savings.
A slight hassle but no big drama. Mistakes happen.
I would hit them for a double few waiver if your partner has a second card and be done with it.
