"Buying for the dividend" is, IMO, dumb because after the ex-div event the price usually falls by about the dividend plus imputation credits. When I am in the market for a dividend paying share I try to buy ex-dividend since I save the missed dividend plus imps through the reduced price AND the 3% or so extra shares I get for my payment will be paying me dividend every 6 months thereafter.
