Bosch Sensortec has introduced what it claims is the first air quality microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) sensor that combines gas, humidity, temperature and barometric pressure sensing with artificial intelligence (AI).
Bosch said the sensor is essentially the world’s smallest four-in-one air quality measurement solution that reduces total cost of ownership, cuts development time and simplifies design.
The BME688 can be used in applications such as food spoilage detection and forest fire detection as well as tracking emperature and humidity changes. The AI features allow users to develop custom solutions for specific use cases and provides an Adafruit-compatible development kit.
The sensor detects the presence of gases such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), volatile sulfur compounds and other gas types such as carbon monoxide and hydrogen.
The goal of the sensor is to collect real-life data directly in the field instead of the lab. By doing this in the field, the data gathered is more reliable in evaluating actual conditions. With the gas data, the BME688 simultaneously measures humidity, barometric pressure and temperature as supplementary data inputs for AI modeling.
The sensor is housed in a compact package and current consumption can be configured between 2.1 µA and 11 mA depending on the required data rates and functions.
