The Financial Review is reporting that the SA Cabinet has approved the country's nuclear policy enabling the controversial technology to play a greater role in alleviating a critical power shortage. Eskom, which operates the country's only nuclear power plant, Koeberg, outside Cape Town, plans to spend 350Billion Rand($43.56b) on generating capacity over the next five years and has invited bids for a new nuclear power station.
This is an early indication that, long term, uraniun is the way to go as the world begins to realize that we cannot sustain the feeding of our insatiable energy hunger with hydrocarbon based energy sources. With increasing oil prices, gas prices and speculators not helping issues, with Gazprom chief predicting oil to hit $250 a pop.It is time we all face reality (WA included) and come to terms with the viability of nuclear energy and the contributions it will make positively to world economy if managed properly.
