Superfunds hold top 300 stocks for their index fund products. They only need to match the market with these holdings so no concern with upwards or downwards SP moves so they all loan out to short for extra income.
If exiting 300 the shorts will be called in, there will be a buying event (shorts covering) and a selling event (funds selling).
After this there is a depletion of shares available to short and the fee to loan increases which allows a share to trade more aligned with its NPV.
Check the most shorted 300 exits from the past , I still hold AMI, picking it up because it looked undervalued coming into a 300 exit and up close to 100% since then.
