The news was the Biden administration listing various Chinese imported items related to EV in particular for tarrifs. Not sure Graphite was actually listed but it may have been and is certainly one of the ones up for review. Perhaps it was also due to shorts getting out before 1/9 when the stock will be downgraded from the $300m + group of shares and therefore more difficult (or even illegible) to be shorted. Whilst coming out of the $300M+ club will generally mean lower SP, the shorters will be concerned that they'll be forced to buy them back, and one things shorters don't like is to be forced to buy back shares.
