Some things, admittedly, are outside CCC's control - like the US shale glut that crippled thermal coal prices, the nationalisation issue, the ongoing problems with credit markets, continued pessimistic equities markets hampering ability to raise equity on good terms, etc.

But plenty of CCC's problems are entirely of their own making, such the DeWitt cost blowout which was nothing short of rank incompetence.

There were also several things that actually went CCC's way and they squandered, like - as BBB pointed out - record thermal coal prices earlier in the year that CCC couldn't manage to turn a profit on.

Regardless, the main thing about directors (or at least directors worth a pinch of you-know-what) is that they take responsibility for things that may be partially or even wholly outside their control. They don't whinge and say "It wasn't MY fault!!!"

They take the credit (and the cash!) if things go well for a company even though that might equally be out of their control. And they still take the cash if things go badly.

As a normal employee, you can expect that if things aren't you fault, you shouldn't be blamed. As a director, though, you don't have that luxury. You are expected to take the curve-balls and black swans that come your way, and find a way past them. That's why you get paid more than the guy on the street.
