Most internet forums aren't very representative since they are generally focused on a specific demographic. Reddit for example is the polar opposite of Hotcopper (except where 4chan made a landing) since it's mainly full of 16-40 yr old people. Whirlpool is a little more centred as it's 25-55ish and predominantly IT/Uni Educated people.
In the same way The Guardian and The Australian comment sections are basically people living on different planets. A forum doesn't have to be balanced but people should try to read from a range of opinions.
