Hindmost, even a fourth person D who is currently the holder of the stock is advantaged. If he is sure the stock is unfairly price, in the short term he can buy as the shorter sells and sell into the balanced market once the shorters impact is removed. Of course, for us mugs the transaction cost is prohibitory. None the less covered shorting is very useful. Naked shorting is and should be disallowed.
