Don't fall for the manipulation conspiracy theory stuff.

The reality is any of us willing to put a bit of our skin in the game of day trading can leverage up to 400x the amount depending on the broker used. These sorts of trading amounts dwarf the firepower available to long term investors with no leverage. So except for force major events it is the collective action of day traders through their brokers using leverage that set the price of any given stock most of the time!

Since this is how the market really works when long term investors complain about manipulation, what they are really complaining about is the day traders doing their thing and using leverage to make a buck. Not some evil conspiratorial manipulator. The risks for Day traders is that they can and do regularly read the market incorrectly and the leverage can amplify their losses and gains as well as their influence on the price.
