Also, as far as the 777 vs 787 vs A380 arguement goes, the 787, Boeing has signalled that the 787 might be stretched in a version 10 as a preference over a 777 composite model.

If that is the case then the 787 will be the winner.

At the moment, the A380 is a luxury that Qantas can't afford. They were bought in an era where the LA route was making massive profits and Qantas could maximise this profit by having an A380. Unfortunately, the GFC happened and Qantas has been caught with its pants down now that more competition has entered on the pacific. It is unfortunate, but I see why they were ordered, but you can't run before you can walk.

The 777 will never be in Qantas colours because the wait for the 777 is too long, you can't buy and take delivery of a 777 for at least 2 years. If Joyce made the decision to change tack to the 777 when he took the job, then they had a chance but Joyce would only ever have been able to trade in the A380 for 777's(Boeing have done deals like this before). Otherwise the break free clauses would have cost a motsa.

Finally, the mention of Air New Zealand and winglets on their 767, a saving of about 9-12% on fuel over long flights. Unfortunately the 767 does the shorter flights for Qantas and along with infrustructure costs it wouldn't be viable.
