As you say Rudd is in a very comfortable position. Politics is what he does and since being stabbed in the back his focus has changed from the task of being a PM to that of getting his job back. His replacements lack of ability has obviously been a strong incentive for him to keep at it.
Should he get his job back i think most would agree winning the election would be an extreme long shot but as the Skyhooks song says "Ego is not a dirty word". He may as well take the job now should the caucus ect offer it as who knows where he would find himself after an election defeat. A sizable election loss under Gillard would lead to a lot of blood letting afterwards and Rudd would be just one of many jocking for position, and he would be the one without Union support behind him.
Still we are all jumping the gun but it is hard to believe the majority of the ALP caucus seriously believe Gillard stands a chance even though she is only up against an equally dodgy and unpopular candidate.
