We only spending 50 billion on defense per year and a few years ago it was much less, the UK spends 100billion $au or 50 billion pounds but has always spent 45 billion pounds or so but not sure if that includes NATO and as you mentioned the UK don't have much capability outside their waters with twice the spending of us and historically much higher spend aswell but Australia has a massive land mass and our borders are much much bigger, our economy is just too small to fund the defense of our borders, waters and land mass and we don't even have the industries or know-how to build it either, we haven't even got a nuclear industry here and our gov's have chosen a very large social spend instead of defense, the large gov social spend also happens in Europe and is why many countries over their haven't been contributing to NATO like they should have been, a big social spend is no good if your country or part of your country gets wiped out by an invader so i would have thought defense spending would attract a higher priority for gov spend but pollies here and in Europe don't seem to think that way.

I think SEQ water is gov owned, is that our tap water?
