You need to be the owner of the shares on the record date, that is 8th July. To be the owner of the shares on 8th July you need to have bought them on Friday 1st July, settlement on the ASX is the transaction date plus 3 days. So Mon/Tue/Wed are the T +3 days, so you should be happy owner on Thu 7th July, but somehow there seems to some jiggery pokery and a day gets lost somewhere (I always have trouble with this). Maybe if you are lucky (or smart) and bought on Monday you might still get the div. However 4th July was the ex date?!? There quite often seems to be a discrepancy between ex and record dates (not just with VRL), I've never figured it out.
