its very easy to look back at red flags and see what they meant but if you have not encountered that sort of person before it is impossible to understand or know what they will become

Strewth, that behaviour surely has to come from your ex's parents... That's the worst of the 60's and 70's when it was 'a family issue' and women were totally trapped and abused.
