Among Greeks, it typically refers to the people gathering together. During ancient Greece, the ekklesia of ancient Athens was a popular assembly of only male citizens. In terms of the Bible teachings, it means an assembly of fellow Christians. Some use a slightly differnet interpretation and say it's the "called out assembly" or "called out ones" - the same intended meaning.
