The Sydney Morning Herald reported in May 1991 that the city’s biggest provider of abortions had recorded a 31% increase in terminations sought by married women compared with the previous year, with some telling counsellors that “there is no way we would be terminating this pregnancy if our business hadn’t failed, if we hadn’t lost our job”.
