MALCOLM Turnbull has defended Peter Dutton, describing him as an “outstanding immigration minister”
Earlier today, the Prime Minister sidestepped questions on Peter Dutton’s controversial remarks about ‘illiterate’ refugees taking Australian jobs.
But speaking in Townsville, Mr Turnbull offered more fulsome support, agreeing with the proposition that many refugees are illiterate.
“Many come from shattered areas of the world and many have no English language skills at all,” he said. “It’s no fault of their own.
What we do in a way many countries do not is that we invest $800 million a year in ensuring they get the services they need so they integrate in society.”
Speaking in Sydney, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said Mr Dutton’s comments “insult refugees and indeed our great immigration history”
“They are comments Pauline Hanson would make,” Mr Shorten said.
