The Sri Lankan civil war ended in early 2009 - well over a decade ago. Sinhalese (Buddhists) and Tamil (Hindu) both work in the fields in Sri Lanka and together. There are roadside "cafes", pretty basic, but the spicy food is delicious. We have eaten for preference in these huts with farm workers shoulder to shoulder.
On national day attended ceremonies with dancing and Sinhalese and Tamils. We left Sri Lanka mid 2017 (before the Islamist terror attack) The terror was mainly against Christian targets and some Colombo/Negombo hotels but was unsettling to my contacts there (Negombo).
I feel sorry for the family. Immigration told them they could not stay - If they returned, they would get priority re-entry so the stated policy would not be broken.
