DJ Newmont In Preliminary Talks With Lihir Advisors - Report

Newmont Mining Corp. ( NEM | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) has engaged in preliminary discussions with Lihir Gold Ltd's (LGL.AU) advisors, but it's unclear whether it's considering a rival takeover offer for the gold miner, The Australian Financial Review reported Monday.
Lihir is currently the subject of a share-based takeover from Newcrest Mining Ltd. (NCM.AU) worth A$9.2 billion when it was launched on April 1.
Without citing any sources, the report said it remains to be seen whether Newmont is considering a rival bid or if it's simply taking the opportunity to look through Lihir's books after Lihir recently opening a data room.
