Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has advised global trading company Mitsui & Co on a joint venture with Challenger Financial Services Group, an Australian-based diversified financial services organisation, to create a Singapore-based investment management business.
Corporate partners Edward Cole from the firm’s Tokyo office and Karen Fountain from the London office led the Freshfields team.
The first initiative of the joint venture will be establishing and sponsoring the Challenger Mitsui Emerging Markets Infrastructure Fund, with a target size of US$1.2bn. The fund will be a closed-end wholesale fund which will invest in a diversified portfolio of infrastructure assets located in emerging market economies.
The fund will invest in different infrastructure assets such as power generation, electric and gas transportation, and railways, which would yield relatively stable income.
