re: peak oil is a nonsense late 70's about 200 japs came to the latrobe valley, set up a pilot plant out near Churchhill and perfected turning the valleys brown coal into oil. the vic govt was involved. they then packed up and went back to japan to wait for the price of oil to rise and thus make the ctl process economical. i grew up in the area and went to school with some jap kids that were there with their parents
