Religions have really only existed since the last ice age (so historians thing). They accompanied the rise of human settlements and were used by king/priests to control their populations. The pharaohs were considered to be gods in their own right, I believe.
In that time there have been THOUSANDS of gods. I understand that even now there are multitudes of gods around the world.
