    That's why Marx was able to predict that the length of the working day would be the first big struggle and would be decided in the political arena, and has nothing to do with markets. Yes, because capitalists get the maximum out of workers from the means of production, and in return they allow access to the means for subsistence. So if the population is worked hard or easy, the pay for workers in aggregate is the same. One worker may be able to get more pay than another, but he is just depressing the wages of another worker by doing this. In aggregate, all workers pays cannot be increased by working harder or longer. That just increases surplus labour time and surplus value appropriated by capitalists.
