    some coaler mentions:

India's has a burning desire for coal to boost its electricity generating capacity

In times like this, Pure Speculation looks to those commodities that can prosper in bad times: gold, anything food-related including potash and phosphate, and thermal coal (because people in tough times put off a new car and eat in more, but they still use electricity).

Then there is India. In regard to electricity, present electricity generating capacity is 182,300 megawatts. Former Indian president, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, wrote during the week that he expects capacity will need to rise to 950,000MW over the next 20 years as India's economy doubles between 2008 and 2016, then doubles again by 2025. He wants to see more nuclear, but there'll also be huge expansion of coal-fired generation.

As UBS puts it in a 114-page report on coal, "thermal coal's trade has stoically defied the recent, massive global commodity market sell-off".

"For a defensive position in a bear market, thermal coal is the preferred commodity," the report adds, which is what Pure Speculation has been saying for some time. Thermal coal continues to be the fuel of choice for cheap power generation. UBS notes that both China and India, which cannot get enough on the world market, are competing to secure coal projects abroad, including deals in the Galilee Basin.

UBS covers the bigger players, but also notes some of the up and coming plays. These include African Energy Resources (AFR) with thermal coal in Botswana and likely market as India and Coal of Africa (CZA) with both thermal and coking coal in South Africa.

Then there's Coalspur Mines (CPL), which has one of the potentially largest export thermal coalmines in North America, while Resource Generation (RES) could be well placed in South Africa to supply coal to a 1320MW power station being planned in that country by an Indian group.

Meanwhile, limping diamond explorer DiamonEx (DON) has found a new life, handing over 60 per cent of the company in a deal to acquire coal projects in Botswana, with one deposit holding a thermal JORC resource of 968 million tonnes.
