Because by this time next year there are going to be meaningfully fewer Australians in positions of employment that will render them able to pay any tax at all, let alone more tax.

Of course, the logical inference is that you simply then tax that smaller cohort of people, who are still lucky enough to be in a taxpaying position, an extra 2% (or 3% or 5% or 10%) more... whatever is necessary to balance the ledger.
